Sonipat, 8 km.

Northbound on India’s longest National Highway. Bilingual gantry signs, striped crash barriers along the median and poplars lining the fields — the details a trucker reads without a second thought.

Where the highway meets the bazaar.

Brick buildings, painted shopfronts and hoardings close in as the town begins. Zebra crossings and a concrete divider tell you it’s time to ease off.
